Fifth,

When did you go to school? There was no swimming lessons until we went to secondary school (where my school had its own pool) when I was at school, my son now has swimming lessons at infants school (he's 10).

Of course there's always some who could not afford it but I think group swimming lessons aren't expensive. Personally, I think if you can afford a family holiday in the sun, you can afford to reach your kids a life skill, I know where my priority has been

Dicko

Schools are doing swimming at primary school much less frequently than years ago when I was at school. So loads of kids don't learn there. If their parents also don't swim they're unlikely to learn. That's why.

And swimming lessons are stupidly expensive.

Even worse than that - not one person thought to film the whole episode and upload it onto YouTube.

Some people have got no consideration for the well-being of others.

Black people drown at a rate of 5x greater than White people in the US...and the bulk of those are in public swimming areas.

Tragic but I just don’t comprehend in this day and age why all kids are competently swimming by five or six.

So everyone then stood around and weren’t able to get help immediately - seems to be the story at preset.

I don't know about the mother, whether she could swim or not but the cleaners apparently said, they couldn't swim

Re: The swimming pool family
That’s the bit always - too many people around that weren’t able to do anything and yet we are not told why they were not able to do anything.

Why was the mum not raising the alarm - jumping in to help, forcing the cleaners to help?

Lots of questions and not many answers

"WHERE THE FUCK WAS THE LIFE BELT?????"

The receptionist had probably requisitioned it for haemorrhoid relief. Which would explain why the cleaners all first ran to reception.

From start to finish this seems odd on way too many levels.

Apparently they were 'strong' swimmers. (I really do have my doubts here..It's a cultural thing but I would be inclined to think that they were weak swimmers at best).

The investigation into the pool was over way way too quickly. How it was re-opened within 48-72 hours beggars belief.

Where was everybody? Why can't cleaners (if they were there) help? What was the mother actually doing? WHERE THE FUCK WAS THE LIFE BELT????? Jeez all pools have one of those!

Having worked with swimming pools for over 3 years, I can only think of something wrong with the sump pump not being balanced, a secondary pump fail could create more suction on the pump operating, also the pressure from the water itself. There was a case of a baby being sucked through the sump a few years ago.

I think he's saying that he'd be "raising alarm bells" because of what he sees as failings at the hotel, not failings of the mother/family.

threesixty 10:38 Fri Jan 3

Exactly - all that. This one is just a bit weirder because these things usually seem to be in rivers etc rather than small pools, and you don't usually get TWO bigger people drowning.

Re: The swimming pool family
I don’t think the pool was big enough to always have to have a life guard according to Spanish law.

Also, there’s one thing being able to swim and another thing being able to rescue someone in the water.

There are grades of swimming proficiency for a reason. Not to mention how calm you must have to be (pretty hard when it’s your own family).

I’m guessing that the daughter found herself unexpectedly in the deeper end of the pool and panicked (as you would as a young child).
And the brother probably wasn’t a good enough swimmer to help her but jumped in anyway (as you would as it’s your sister).

The dad then did what any dad would do and tried to help but again wasn’t a great swimmer so he drowned as well. If you can’t stand in water with your head way above the water you can drown. It’s easy to drown. All you have to do is swallow some water and it’s easy for it to go downhill in a matter of seconds.

When it’s your son or sister etc.. your probably going to risk more and try to do more than you actually can (stay under the water for longer) in order to help. I think that’s why both the dad and brother ending up dying. It happens a lot, people jump in to save someone and end up losing their own lives.

Tragedy really. But it can happen.
